First World War Commemoration Event
To mark the First World War, St George’s Church in the heart of The Village Edgbaston, held a series of events at the weekend to commemorate the lives of local people in the parish who died in the War and to remember the impact this had on families and the community.
These included Raymond Lodge, who was killed at the age of 26 on the Somme in September 1915 and his family, including Sir Oliver Lodge, the scientist, academic and psychical investigator. The family lived opposite the church and a memorial to Raymond was placed by his parents in St George’s. Over the course of the weekend there was a seminar and exhibition of memorabilia focussing on Raymond, his family and Birmingham connections.
